This popular and affordable layout is available at better train shops, as well as several large toy and department store chains. Complete and ready to run, this train and layout requires minimal setup and can be operated by even the more casual hobbyist.
This layout includes a completely scenicked oval in a southwestern, partially wooded desert scene. 2 mountains frame the layout, providing tunnels for the track to duck under; a scenic river bisects the flat valley between them. The track is adorned with an ATSF streamlined passenger train, including a single A unit with the familiar warbonnet design, a passenger car, and an observation car bringing up the rear. Baggage and kitchen cars are not needed as the run is rather short. Motive power is provided to the engine via the keychain ring, which is pulled out up to 1" by the operator. This winds a clockwork mechanism that then delivers 5 to 10 complete circuits around the single mainline. While only one direction (forward) is available and speed control is problematic, an on/off switch may be activated while the train is enroute. This motive power is immense, easily accomodating grades of 10% or more, and struggling to make the pass even when grades approach 40%.
Audio controls appear to be lacking somewhat, but they will not conflict with your current Railsounds, QSI, or PS2 systems. While missing the clickety-clack of old-fashioned O31 secional track, the train does deliver the satisfying whoosh of an efficient passenger train's wheels on modern, welded track.
When properly run, this layout may give many hours of enjoyment. I have personally run mine on a near-daily basis, at the office, and it has provided minimal distraction to my co-workers. While not exactly O scale in dimensions, it may yet find a place in many a train enthusiast's home.
Lionel Keychain Layout, 1999, Lionel Corp licensed product manufactured by Basic Fun. MSRP $4.99. Also spotted at major airports and in gift shops in Yellowstone and Teton parks, for $5.50-6.99. Target and Toys R Us carry it for $2.99-3.49.
With this much to offer, the seasoned railroader will no doubt be tempted to place this train out of the reach of young ones. Lionel has included, at no extra charge, a complete transparent plastic shield that extends up around the entire perimeter of the layout, meeting at the apex to form a complete dome! In addition, Lionel has gone Magne-Traction one better, with a unique tractive mechanism that ensures derailments will almost never occur, regardless of the grade operated at.
While on certain grades the train may occasionally hit the outside portal wall on tunnel #2, this does not appear to result in permanent damage to the train. Placing the layout such that tunnel #2 is entered at a 3-4% grade will help to avoid this harmless but slightly embarassing accident.
